The bit with Sticks

The sticks also had their own significance as far as fertility is concerned. Modesty prevents me from going into detail here but it's something you can think about while perusing the following pictures!

The bells are to frighten away evil spirits. They bear an uncanny resemblance to those worn by The Bathampton Morris Men, on whose knees I first learnt to wave my stick around as a little nipper.

Wherever Morris originated from it has now made its way back to Spain, in the sturdy, virile form of the Black Horse Morris in Barcelona. Just to confuse things further, people often ask if we are from Mallorca or the Basque Country (unless of course they're English tourists who just grimace and say, "Oh, bloody hell, look, Morris dancers!"). This mistaken identity is further evidence for the Spanish origins theory, though you will find something very similar to Morris dancing in many agrarian societies. We were given a photo once of some Polish dancers who also wore crossbelts and carried sticks.
