The Corpus Cristi Flower Festival

Yes your intrepid reporter was out early ready to capture the whole carpet-laying process, fortified only with expresso coffees, carajillos and Ducados.

(And hold onto your trousers. You ain't gonna get no fancy-pants navigation buttons here!)

It all starts early on in the day with "The Man with the Plan". He's the one drawing out the lines from a little bit of paper straight onto the asphalt. No slick computer trickery here.
The sections are marked out and the colours defined. Pink petals here and coffee grounds there. (Coffee grounds are excellent for lettering.)
The petals have been separated and sorted overnight by seasoned Valkyries of the profession. Now is the moment to lay them out. Everyone's recruited to help.
Carnations, rose petals, irises. Grass clippings, wheat chaff, and rice. Here even artichokes are being put to good use. The effect is quite impressive. Roses, carnations, yes, very pretty, but to be struck by the humble artichoke you have to be there. No fancy camera or computer can do it full justice.
