Sitges has always loved a Party. Just after the Civil War, when Carnival was banned throughout Spain as irreligious, Sitges' sensible burghers got around the impasse by declaring themselves to be the Republic of Sitges for the duration of the festivities. I'm sure the Guardia Civil would have been ready to do their duty, but who could resist those scantily clad, rumba-dancing ladies and the abundance of flowing beverages?
So, in time-honoured tradition, Playafun follows the local Fiestas. If you've already been to Sitges but missed the Flower Festival, or are curious about what we do in the summer here, come by regularly and our specialised team of reporters will cover all the events. |

Castelldefels Carnival 2001

24th February 2001 Yes, Carnival! That wonderful chance to put on tights, dance till you drop, drink masses of wine and generally act like a fool. As usual we have spared no expense, we were going to show you the Carnival in Rio, but in the end decided on the home-made charms of Castelldefels. |

The Streets of Festes de Gràcia |
15th August 2000 The Festes de Gràcia are one of the most important fiestas in Barcelona. There is lots to see: bands, competitions, sardine fry ups, not to mention the Gypsies in the Pça. del Poble Romaní, birth-place of Rumba Catalana. It all being too much, Playafun limited itself to observing the famous garlanded streets of the fiesta. |

Tivissa Correfoc

29th July 2000 An essential component of any fiesta, of course, is the correfoc and its devils and fireworks. Playafun raids the travel budget to pay another visit to Tivissa on the gracious invitation of the Al Merry Bedou tribe to film the local Correfoc. |

The Vinyet Fiesta

5th August 1999 Every year on the 5th of August the Vinyet Sanctuary on the outskirts of Sitges opens its doors and a fiesta is held. Ludovic Sprout, the famous Fifth Avenue photographer takes us to the fair, the Sardanas and Castellers. |

La Colla Jove de Castellers de Sitges

The Castellers or Human Towers are a tradition found throughout Catalunya, and every self-respecting town has to have one. Playafun takes you inside a rehearsal by the Colla Jove de Castellers de Sitges to find out what it's all about. Lluis de Prat our token Catalan noses around and checks out all the moves. Hopefully, if he doesn't bugger up the job, we'll soon see the Colla in action at the Sitges Festa Major. |

Corpus Cristi

6th June 1999 For Corpus Cristi Sitges puts on its best face. Though more genteel than Carnival or San Juan, it more than satisfies the Sitgetano desire to lay on a show. There's the Carnation Show on Saturday, prize giving for the best-dressed balcony and and even a Bonsai competition. But the event that really brings in the crowds is the petal-carpeted streets. Our intrepid roving reporter Louis LeWiss, fresh from covering Sophie Rhyss-Jones' left nipple, was there for Playafun. |
